Metrically, this hymn is identical to “The Soldiers Guarding Thy Tomb” in Greek. In the Bulgarian books, they share a melody; but in some Greek traditions, they do not.

This hymn in the first tone is found at Wednesday evening vespers during weeks of the first tone, as a sticheron of the aposticha dedicated to the Apostles. Hymns using this melody may be found in any of the usual sticheral contexts: at “Lord, I Call,” the aposticha, or the praises at matins.

Ὢ τοῦ παραδόξου θαύματος/О дивное чудо

This hymn in the first tone is the first sticheron at “Lord, I Call” for the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God on August 15. The melody may be used in any of the sticheral contexts.

There is some confusion between this melody (in tone 1) and “O Most Glorious Wonder” in tone 8. In Greek, both have the same name (though different meter); but in Slavonic they received different names, which is reflected in the English titles used here.

In Greek practice, this hymn is best-known for being sung at small compline on Fridays of Great Lent, together with the Akathist Hymn. It is also the theotokion at the kathismata/sedalny after the first reading of the psalter at Sunday matins of the third tone. This melody is used almost exclusively for kathismata/sedalny.

Θείας πίστεως/Божественныя веры

This is the troparion of St. Paul the Confessor, whose feast is kept on November 6. This melody is somewhat rarely used for other troparia as well as sessional hymns. In Greek usage, the troparion of the Great-martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-streaming is sung to a melody that is almost identical to this one; the difference is only in one syllable. Nonetheless, the troparion of St. Demetrius is never labeled as a podoben of this melody in the Greek chant-books.

This melody is unknown in the traditions of Rus, but it is readily available from Byzantine sources, including the Bulgarian chant-books.

This hymn is the first sticheron at the aposticha of vespers of the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. Its melody may be used in any of the sticheric contexts.

Note that in Greek usage, this hymn is considered to be a derivative of a hymn to St. Sabbas the Sanctified, “Rejoice, truly fragrant vessel of ascetic struggles.”

This is the last sticheron at the aposticha of Great Wednesday matins, directly before the Hymn of Kassiani. Its melody is occasionally borrowed by stichera at “Lord, I Call” or the praises.

This is the sixth antiphon at Matins of Great Friday. Its melody is used for various other stichera on weekdays of tone 7. It is otherwise rarely, if ever, encountered.

This sessional hymn is appointed for matins of the Tuesday of Cheesefare Week. The melody is very widely used for sessional hymns/kathismata.

As far as I know, no setting of this melody exists in the traditions of Rus’, but it is well known in Bulgarian and Byzantine settings.

O Most Glorious Wonder

Ὢ τοῦ παραδόξου θαύματος/О преславнаго чудесе

This hymn in the eighth tone is sung at the praises on the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. Its melody is widely used for sticheral hymns.

This hymn is one of the stichera at the aposticha of Wednesday matins during weeks of the eighth tone. This melody is called for relatively rarely for other sticheraric hymns.

This melody seems to be unknown in the traditions of Rus, but it is readily available in the Greek chant-books.

The Universe Offers to Thee

Ὡς ἀπαρχὰς τῆς φύσεως/Яко начатки естества

This hymn is the kontakion of Sunday of All Saints. Its melody is also used for several other kontakia.

Thou, the Life of All, Art Risen

Ἀνέστης ἐκ νεκρών/Воскреслъ еси

This text is the first sessional hymn at the first psalter reading on Sundays of tone 8. In the Russian books it is marked as a samopodoben/automelon, but the Greek books give no designation at all. However, in Greek, this text has the exact same meter and syllable count as “The piping of the shepherds,” which is one of the sessional hymns/kathismata appointed for matins of December 20. Therefore one might say that this samopodoben designation is a surrogate for that hymn; it would therefore be entirely appropriate to sing any sessional hymn with the podoben “The piping of the shepherds” to this melody.

This hymn is sung as the troparion/apolytikion of the Saturday of the Akathist Hymn. Its melody is used by various other troparia/apolytikia, kontakia, and kathismata/sedalny.
